Best Advisor Says, “I Can Empathize.”

I feel extremely fortunate to have a network of people around me that I trust for advice.  I have worked hard to cultivate this network and am grateful for it.  These are individuals that I trust.  I trust their confidentiality when its necessary.  I trust they sincerely care about me and my well-being.  I respect their accomplishments as an indication of their abilities, wisdom and hard work.

During a call with one of these trusted advisors, we were discussing my role as CEO in business development.  Our Sales Manager submitted his notice to vacate his position to pursue his life’s passion.  Immediately after wishing him well as I know his statement to be true, I got to work thinking about how to cover his duties both interim and long term.  Fortunately, I have some great options, which makes the decision making process challenging.  The departure also means a season of increased activity for me.

We spoke for about 40 minutes, but the most important thing he said to me was, “I can empathize.  I’ve been there and remember how it feels.”  Just having someone to relate my feelings and fears and understands was a huge benefit.  Knowing I am not alone in the struggle forward is highly destressing.

Logically, I know we will make it through.  Using my affirmation of positively deterministic and responding to every challenge with “Good” means I am optimistic this challenge will allow me to build stronger customer relationships and a better business.  I guess I just needed one empathetic soul who could relate.

So if you are an advice giver, please state your empathy as it may be the most important thing you say.  If you are an advice seeker, look for someone who can empathize and has traversed the same ground.
