Empowering is Not Enough
My job is to empower those around me to do the best work. However, giving my team the tools, knowledge, permission, and resources to do great work is not enough. In addition to empowerment, I must encourage and expect their best work.
When great work happens, I want to be right there to recognize it! I want to be excited for you and celebrate the achievements. The goal in creating an organization bigger than one person is to magnify what can be accomplished together. When those around me do exciting things, the organization lives up to that collective mission. We are accomplishing what we set out to do which is be greater as a set than alone. The encouragement and recognition will hopefully inspire you to do more good work. Maybe even take on more difficult tasks in the future.
Encouragement is the area of my leadership I have spent the most time working on. Admittedly it is still a work in progress.
I also expect great work. We are not here to be mediocre or just get by, so why would I tolerate that? I cannot let you waste your talents and abilities. That is a disservice to you personally and to the organization as a whole. You were hired to do great things. I believe in you! That is why we added you to the team.
