Progress Update: Create and Follow a Strong Routine

At the beginning of 2017, I set personal development goals.  One was to create a follow a strong routine.  I realized I was spending an inordinate amount of time trying to figure out the best way or what to do next which led to insufficient time actually executing and excessive change.  I am now trying to create a baseline of productive behavior that repeated over time will generate big results.

Consistency
I have been very consistent with the execution of my daily bookended routines.  My focus has been on weekdays only.  The workweek is the strongest routine to build upon.  I missed one day in January and one in February.  I didn’t miss a day in March.  That means I am running a little over 95%.  I give myself an A.

Evolution of the Routine
The initial routine I started in January has since grown.  My goal was, to begin with, strong consistency, so I made it simple.  It began with scripture reading, prayer, and meditation each morning.  There was not an evening bookend component.  As I have studied the routines of other great business leaders, a strong pattern emerges.  Almost all have bookended routines as to how they start and end each day.  Thus, I added a little bit to the evening.  The routines as they currently stand.

  • Morning
    • Scripture Reading – 1 chapter
    • Prayer – 10 minutes
    • Meditation – 10 minutes
    • Thoughts – Top 2-3 things on my mind
    • Objectives – Top 3 things to accomplish today
  • Evening
    • Reflection
      • Objective Achievement
        • Actions to complete the top 3 if any remain unfinished
      • Journal Business Progress and Major Events from the day

Next Steps
My goals for the next phase of this objective are to maintain this strong consistency and develop routines within my work life.  This way I am taking consistent action personally and professionally.  I believe this will ensure that I am doing the right things day in and day out to grow the business.  What are those repeatable actions I need to take every day? Or every week?
