Summer Really Messed Up My Routine

One of my goals for the year has been to create and follow a strong, virtuous routine.  I was doing really well right up to the point we started to engage in more summer time activities. My routine had been:

  • Morning
    • Scripture Reading – 1 chapter
    • Prayer – 10 minutes
    • Meditation – 10 minutes
    • Thoughts – Top 2-3 things on my mind
    • Objectives – Top 3 things to accomplish today
  • Evening
    • Reflection
      • Objective Achievement
        • Actions to complete the top 3 if any remain unfinished
      • Journal Business Progress and Major Events from the day

I have been able to maintain the objectives and reflection portions of the routine on a daily basis.  The rest has lost all consistency.  If I conduct these activities, it is at random, both as I remember and as I have a quiet moment.

The root cause is that I have lost the discipline to get to sleep at a time that allows me to get up early and execute the routine.  During the winter this seemed easier.  There were fewer outside activities, or if there were activities since the sun went down earlier, we were home earlier.  Now things tend to run later, and I want to stay up later.  Then the alarm goes off early, and I push snooze or simply push it back for just enough time to get ready for work.  Plus, Netflix launched new content I really want to watch.  Thanks for wrecking the routine Master of None and House of Cards!

I believe the investment in the routine is still paying off.  Even though I have not been consistent with the routine, I still feel some of the benefits of the activities.   However, I worry how long they may last if they are continually missed.

The solution seems simple.  I know how to get back on the wagon.  The question will be whether or not I have the discipline to restore the consistency.
